By now everyone has heard the guy from Duck Dynasty has said some homophobic things. Many people are justifiable upset over it. Of course there are also some on the right rushing to the guy’s defense.
Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal said the following on a FOX News website:
“Phil Robertson and his family are great citizens of the State of Louisiana. The politically correct crowd is tolerant of all viewpoints, except those they disagree with. I don’t agree with quite a bit of stuff I read in magazine interviews or see on TV. In fact, come to think of it, I find a good bit of it offensive. But I also acknowledge that this is a free country and everyone is entitled to express their views. In fact, I remember when TV networks believed in the First Amendment. It is a messed up situation when Miley Cyrus gets a laugh, and Phil Robertson gets suspended.”
You can see Jindal trying to play all of the culture war cards he can in one statement. First, Robertson is actually the victim and its the gays who are the oppressors (yeah because I am sure straight white guys in Louisiana have a great deal to fear from gays and lesbians. Second, he puts it all back on the convenient villain of Hollywood for putting out stuff he doesn’t like. Lastly, he tries to link Miley Cyrus into this, why? Why the hell not. If you’re against Robertson you MUST be for that tweaking little Jezebel.
This designed to help Jindal with the religious conservatives, a key group in the GOP primary he will need if he has any chance of winning the nomination. You can bet Ted Cruz, Marco Rubio, and others will be speaking about this as well.
