If you are trying to screw over the GOP’s chances to take power, and you know actually govern the country, in 2014 and 2016 there is no better way than to have as many members as possible face primaries. It turns out that the Madison Project, forever known here after as the Ashley Madison Project, is calling for just that to happen.
They want 2014 to the be the year of primaries. By challenging people everywhere groups like the Ashley Madison Project do risk doing a couple of things. First, blowing winnable races. Do the name Christine O’Donnell and Richard Mourdock ring any bells? Both beat moderates who were shoo-ins for electoral victory and ended up giving the seat to Democrats.
Second, you divert resources. There is only so much money to spend on campaigns and if the party is putting a great deal into primaries it may end up meaning someone in a tough general election losses out on resources.
Third, you scare people away. Conservatives may not like Olympia Snowe but they threat of a primary scared her off and gave the seat the Democrats.
What will the impact of these primaries be, guess we’ll find out soon enough.
