Rick Santorum Has the Will, George

Rick Santorum probably isn’t inviting George Will over for drinks and dinner anytime soon.  The former-Senator was the subject of Will’s Sunday column.

After laying out Santorum’s career, 2012 run, and passion over social issues Will raises the biggest questions about Santorum.  Namely, that Santorum ran an underdogs campaign last time and took his turn as being not-Romney at just the right time but can that work again?  Considering there will not be a Romney this time it seems at least part of the strategy will have to change.

Santorum will be facing a more competitive field in 2016 than he did previously.  The faces will be younger with more connection to the GOP base than Romney ever had.  Plus, among Paul, Cruz, Walker, Rubio, Christie and Pence there is not the stigma of defeat.  None of them have ever lost a race.  Santorum’s last two campaigns, in 2006 and 2012, both ended in a loss.

Does that mean Santorum won’t run?  No, at this point I think he will.   First, he doesn’t like the policies being put out by RonPaul or his son.  During the last primary Santorum had many exchanges with Paul over policy and you can bet he will want to engage the son.

Also, on a personal level it would be hard not to.  Santorum came in second to a guy who had more money, endorsements than he did.  Remember, Santorum didn’t even have a physical national campaign headquarters.  Knowing that he came within a few thousand votes in Ohio of defeating Romney and potentially winning the nomination must eat at him.

The only way to exercise that Demon really is to run again.  Otherwise Santorum would spend the rest of his life wondering if only.
