In 2009 everything lined up for Bob McDonnell. He ran a solid campaign, with a unified party, against a tired challenger. Things went so well McDonnell actually won Fairfax County. He was the first Republican since George W. Bush in 2000 to do this running statewide at the top of a ticket.
This will not happen again.
