Russian President Putin set off a political crap storm when he wrote in the New York Times:
And I would rather disagree with a case he made on American exceptionalism, stating that the United States’ policy is “what makes America different. It’s what makes us exceptional.” It is extremely dangerous to encourage people to see themselves as exceptional, whatever the motivation.
So now OF COURSE every American politician will be going out of their way to say and prove that America is exceptional. For example Rand Paul wrote this for Time. This not a conservative phenomenon either. Liberal columnist Eugene Robinson chimed in with this piece.
The GOP tried to use Obama’s remarks from 2009 to say that he didn’t believe in American exceptionalism. Look at this clip from the last primary season:
So you can bet in 2016 everyone in the GOP race will be out doing themselves (the Democrats will probably do the same) to say over and over how exceptional America is at everything.
