Contrary to Washington Post killjoy Alexandra Petri there are people who are interested in the 2016 presidential race. One of them is Iowa conservative activist Chuck Laudner who was a Santorum supporter in 2012 but perfectly summed up the 2016 races when he said:
“Republicans are having a battle. You’ve got Libertarians; social conservatives — the base of the party and then you’ve got ‘The Establishment’ and there’s a big tug-of-war going on, on a lot of big issues. That’s all got to be settled and it won’t be until we pick a nominee in 2016, I’m afraid.”
For all of the polls maybe Laudner is right when he says, “at this point many Republican are “throwing a lot of spaghetti at the wall and waiting to see what sticks.”
If you listen to how he ends his quotes you get the sense he isn’t confident his side will win. Maybe an important question to ask is if conservative activists actually think they can win and beat the establishment.
What if they did this time? What if they didn’t resign themselves to defeat but actually played the game like they thought they could win. Maybe, that’s what’s different about this time?
