Hard to believe but before the mid 1970’s religious conservatives had little impact on American politics.
So how did that change? What forces in society lead to the change? And who made the most of the opportunity?
To find out the answers to all of those questions and have a much better understanding of American politics over the last 40 years I highly recommend you read “With God On Our Side: The Rise of the Religious Right in America” by William Martin.
This is a controversial topic to be sure. It arouses passions on both sides. That’s where the book is at its best. He doesn’t advocate for or against their policies. Martin only explains who they are and what they did. The reader is left to make up their own mind and get a better understanding of who the Religious Right is and what they want.
If you want to know how the GOP candidates will talk to conservatives in Iowa and South Carolina read “With God On Our Side.”
