Every presidential campaign has at least one Edsel. For those of you who don’t know what I mean, Edsel was a car put out by Ford that was supposed to be both stylish and innovative.
What it turned out to be was a flop. The public didn’t buy the car and Ford lost a boat load of money.
Presidential campaigns can sometimes be the same way. Someone looks good on paper, has a strong record and seems to have many smart behind them and then when it comes time to actually campaign they just never take off.
Past examples in the GOP would include Tim Pawlenty, Rudy Giuliani, Elizabeth Dole, Phil Gramm, Jack Kemp, and John Connally. At one point or another early on in the race each of these candidates was at or near the top of the polls and was generating significant media interest. All of the fizzled out and ended up winning no states and having no real impact on the race.
Who will be 2016’s Edsel? Hopefully no one but if history is any guide someone will end up wearing this crown.
