I grew up in the 80’s, so I remember the idea of famous rock bands reuniting for a big summer tour having some novelty. The Rolling Stones, the Who, Pink Floyd, the Monkeys all had successful comeback tours back in the day.
This summer’s hottest reunion tour looks to be the Culture Wars. That’s right the fight over social issues like abortion, NEA funding, guns, the death penalty, flag burning, Clinton impeachment, and affirmative action was a mainstay of American politics in the 80’s and 90’s.
Check out this Jesse Helms “classic” to see the culture wars at their best:
In the 2000’s for a number of reasons the Culture Wars seemed to fade. The tragedy of 9/11, wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, and Great Recession took their place.
Let’s review the last week to see how the tour is going. You had the Supreme Court rule for DOMA and against the Voting Rights Act, Ohio abortion language in the budget, U.S. Senate passed an immigration bill, Wendy Davis filibuster, and the Trayvon Martin trial started.
So we’ve had issues of race, gay rights, immigration and abortion. Sounds like the tour is off to a big start and every GOP candidate or 2016 is going to want to play a part in it. This tailor made for Cruz, Rubio, Walker, and Jindal. Not so ideal for Christie or Paul but I’m sure they’ll find a way to sit in with the band for a few sets. Either way rock on:
