According to Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal the GOP’s winter and spring of introspection is over. In today’s Politico Governor Jindal let’s us all know it’s summer and it’s time for action baby. Why? Things ain’t that bad for the GOP and conservatism in general.
What? Yes, the creation enthusiast lists the following criteria as a sign conservative Republicans are doing ok:
1) We have 30 Governors
2) We took control of the House in 2010 and held it in 2012
3) Obama ran a tremendous campaign in 2008, and our outgoing president was unpopular
4) The just completed presidential campaign strategy of playing it safe and assuming a poor economy would win it for us was an obvious mistake.
If you change the dates the first three points are exactly what any Democrat could have said in 1985. At the time Democrats had 34 governorships, controlled the House of Representatives, and Reagan did win big against an unpopular incumbent party just five years ago. Would anyone look back at the mid 80’s, and oh maybe the subsequent 20 years, and say that was the start of a rebirth of activist government? I think you get my point.
As for the fourth point that should trouble Republicans even more than Jindal’s Pollyannaish view of the current political climate. How did the GOP play it safe in 2012? They ran a guy who campaigned on a Reagan style platform. Romney wanted to cut taxes, increase military spending , cut the size of government, repeal regulations, and was socially conservative. When that was put up against Obama, in an election where unemployment was over 7%, the Reagan-esque policies lost. Electorally they lost pretty bad.
What is Jindal’s solution as the economy starts to get better? Is it to run someone on the same platform? What’s that saying about doing the same thing and expecting a different result…
Then Jindal closes with a rambling list of why the American people are about to turn against the Democrats. According to the governor this is what Democratic party stands for:
Because the left wants: The government to explode; to pay everyone; to hire everyone; they believe that money grows on trees; the earth is flat; the industrial age, factory-style government is a cool new thing; debts don’t have to be repaid; people of faith are ignorant and uneducated; unborn babies don’t matter; pornography is fine; traditional marriage is discriminatory; 32 oz. sodas are evil; red meat should be rationed; rich people are evil unless they are from Hollywood or are liberal Democrats; the Israelis are unreasonable; trans-fat must be stopped; kids trapped in failing schools should be patient; wild weather is a new thing; moral standards are passé; government run health care is high quality; the IRS should violate our constitutional rights; reporters should be spied on; Benghazi was handled well; the Second Amendment is outdated; and the First one has some problems too.
Wow. I missed that campaign rally where Obama discussed is love of Hustler magazine, while encouraging people to not eat meat, and always be careful to not sail too close to the edges of the Earth because they would fall off.
I can’t tell what’s worse – if Jindal knows this is crap and he’s just peddling it because he thinks it helps him with conservative activists, or if he really believes what he wrote? Either he’s a huckster or an idiot.
